Puerto Rico viewed from a gringo’s perspective

In the States if you have a lights out on your vehicle you get a ticket. I guess not here, because lots of people have burnt out headlights, taillights, and blinkers. There has been a few times while I was driving at night and almost hit a car that was driving right in front of me because his brake / taillights were out. On rare occasions I see cars driving without headlights on as well. This really isn’t advised here because streets are usually not illuminated.
Another thing Puerto Ricans don’t like to do is use their blinkers. I would advise if you are new to the country to not use your blinker if you are trying to switch lanes. If you do, most likely people will speed up not to let you over. I just don’t understand why they don’t use them before they turn. – Drives me CRAZY
In the States, if I am behind someone and they signal that they will be turning soon, like most people we switch lanes. Here they don’t. I guess they aren’t used to it. I thought maybe the timing of when I turned on my blinker might have something to do with it; I tried switching them on earlier and later than normal. It doesn’t matter. Strange…

When driving at night you have to be aware of the many people riding horses in the country. This is extremely dangerous! There are MANY people on the streets in the country. It is amazing that there are so few accidents!
