Puerto Rico viewed from a gringo’s perspective

When you are going somewhere that you have never been, you will always have to ask for directions. Streets are not labeled with the names of the streets (most). If they are labeled, the sign is usually covered up by vegetation. You will often get direction told to you like “Go down this next street. Once you pass three to five lights, the next street with a white house, turn there. Then take a right after a big hill. You will then see a palm tree (which are everywhere) take another left.” You get the idea. So there is always someone driving around slowly and lost.
You just missed the exit off of the highway! Too bad. You won’t have another exit for a long time. Or if you miss the street off of a regular road, too bad again. You will have to make an illegal u turn. You will see Puerto Rican doing the illegal turns all of the time. This of course slows down traffic because you have to wait on them.
On a positive note, as most Puerto Ricans will tell you, “No matter how lost you get, you will never leave the island in your car.”

The last point is a positive one, albeit one that can make itself humorous.
My sister came to visit me last fall. She rented a car one day and was gonna go to Ponce and Caja de Muertos. At 6pm she called to tell me she was coming back to San Juan.
At 8pm she calls me and asks me for directions. I ask her where she’s at.. “I’m in Aguadilla!”
I fell over laughing. I told her keep driving in the same road heading the same direction, you’re basically halfway to San Juan having gone the wrong direction.
She was pissed when she got home :D
I would of been a little pissed as well…
