Puerto Rico viewed from a gringo’s perspective
20 Mar
The very first day I was in Puerto Rico, I was in a taxi driving down the highway on the way to get a rent a car. I asked the driver if he knew how to get to the hotel I was going to be staying at. He slams on his breaks (in the middle of traffic) and start pointing the direction to another highway. I thought the guy had lost his mind.
The thing is, people will park and stop anywhere they want. If they are in your way, it is up to you to figure out how to get around them. Yellow line or red line? Color doesn’t matter! Who cares if it is illegal?
The other day my girlfriend and I stopped by a store that had limited parking. We were in there for maybe 5 minutes. As we were walking back to the car, some guy was getting out of his car; he had just double parked behind us. He said oh you have enough room to get out and just kept on walking. He was right we did have enough room; it was less than an inch though. I couldn’t believe the cojones.

I know several of my graphic design colleagues/contacts here are also graffiti artists… which makes it funny (and sad) when I see them pull up to a yellow curb, and spray it white (and get away with it!), with better accuracy than the original curb painting machine sprayed it in during the Nixon administration.
Robert: I just read your comment and though - Why didn’t I think of that…???
Then I realized it wouldn’t matter anyway, everyone parks anywhere and never gets a ticket.. :(
(I actually have seen cops give tickets for parking… very rare though…)
It really depends on the area, where I work, Amelia, if you park on a yellow line and leave the car there while you work you WILL have at least one ticket and a sticker on your window when you get back.
@Robert - wow, that’s awesome, never thought of that!
*Note to self - buy white spray paint
